For a Vocalist



Should the spirited words from the virginal lips be frowned upon,
    You would be denying her full expression of innermost feelings:
Oh how I praise for that reason her voice, which, under the Muse's
    Protection, reveals to me the warm depths of her heart!
All fretting ceases, and yes, even the boor is charmed,
    On seeing this beauty embodied, sensing the eternal powers near.

Soll auf der Jungfrau Mund die begeisterte Rede verpönt sein,
    Ist euch des tiefern Gefühls volles Bekenntnis versagt:
O wie preis ich die Sängerin drum, die, unter der Muse
    Schutz, mir den lieblichen Grund ihres Gemütes enthüllt!
Niemand ärgert sich mehr, ja entzückt steht selbst der Philister,
    Fühlt, in des Schönen Gestalt, ewige Mächte sich nah.
