did You notice how
so many things ceased to upset us
or rob us of our balance?
And did You notice how calm we stayed
when lightning struck the pine tree
right outside the study hall?

There was one priest
whom we especially esteemed
who spent all his time
walking back and forth quietly
under the trees.

At night in dreams we took on wings
and flew with ease from tree to tree
along the path where priests
would say their breviary.

There were times when everything
was so peaceful
that I would busy myself
dreaming up some trial to suit me
that I could be seen with.
